The Fountain City Art Center has not one, but three new displays open to the public!
The Fountain City Art Guild has a brilliant display of oils, watercolors, pencils, and pastels
through January 7, 2012. Most of these paintings are for sale.
A very special memorial display of watercolors by Lib Nicely, long-time Guild member, has been made possible by her
daughters, Kay Nicely Bateman and Jane Nicely. Their mother had an interest in drawing and painting all her life and won more
than 30 top awards in area shows.
In Student Exhibits, the Art Center is featuring artwork from Fulton High, Vine Magnet, Whittle Springs Middle,
Beaumont, Maynard, West End, and Christenberry Elementary Schools.
To see this exhibit or the Guild exhibits, visit us at 213 Hotel Avenue next to Fountain city Park.
We’re open Tu, TH 9-5; W, F 9-10; and the 2nd and 3rd Saturdays of each month from 9-1.
For information about our classes, exhibits, and events, call 357-ARTS! We’re here for YOU!

September 2 – 16: “Special Tribute Exhibit for Chloe Harrington” Reception September 2
Student Exhibit: Watercolors by the Students of Mary Baumgartner
You’re Never Too Old…for Art
This summer, Chloe Harrington celebrated her 95th birthday with her four sons, daughters-in-law, and many grand and great grand children. While family and church have always been top priorities for Chloe, she does have one other passion that has kept her so young at heart. That passion is art.
After her boys “left the nest,” Chloe started painting in her basement studio. In the early 70’s, Chloe asked her friends to join her and brought in Joyce Ford to help instruct them all. This group was the nucleus of what is now the Fountain City Art Guild. The Guild was for watercolorist only until about 2001
when members voted to open the membership to all 2-D media. The Fountain City Art Center itself, and the Parkside Open Door Gallery in the Center, started with Guild members who supported the idea of converting the old library building into a community art center in 2004.
Many Guild members have come forward to say that they probably would never have painted or pursued art if it had not been for Chloe’s early crusade to support the Arts in Fountain City. Charlotte Walton said she found the smell of oil paints disagreeable; she would have given up painting all together if it had not been for Chloe’s encouragement and her basement studio. Art Center instructor Rob White taught art in public school for a number of years, but who first got him interested and cheered him on?
It was Chloe who gave Rob his first set of watercolors many years ago.
On Friday, September 2, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM, the Fountain City Art Center invites the public to the opening reception for “A Tribute to Chloe Harrington,” a two-week exhibit of about 35 pieces by Chloe. She is not just a watercolorist, though. Chloe took workshops from over 10 well-known artists from all over the country, never afraid to try new techniques and new media. Many of you remember that Chloe’s irises were chosen for the 1989 Dogwood Arts Print. The exhibit will include oils, watercolors, and mixed media.
Dave Dixon, recently retired Band Director at Gresham Middle, has made a DVD of his recent interview with Chloe, and the Center will show parts of that interview during the reception.
The Center is located at 213 Hotel Avenue and is open Tu, Th 9-5; W, F 10-5; Sat. 9-1. For more information: call 865.357.ARTS; email fcartcenter@knology.net; www.fountaincityartctr.org.
Brenda Moulton (FC Art Center Board Member) chats with Chloe at recent reception.
