General Instructions: to sign up for classes, call or email the Art Center Monday-Saturday, MWF 10-5, TTH 9-5, Sat. 9-1. (Exception: call clay instructors directly to schedule.) Sign up early and pay two weeks before classes begin. Mail in checks or bring payment to the Art Center. Checks should be made payable to the “Fountain City Art Center” or “FCAC”. You will receive a full reimbursement if a class or workshop is cancelled by the instructor or by the Art Center. Prices listed indicate non-member or member of the Art Center. Materials lists are available for classes and workshops when applicable. Gift certificates can be purchased for all classes and workshops.

SCHEDULE of REGULAR CLASSES:
CLAY
“Hand Building with Clay,”: 4 wks; basic techniques will be covered: coil, pinch, and slab. $135/$115; adults and youth; materials, tools, and firing included. Students may enroll even after a class has started. (Currently contracting a new instructor for advanced classes, but Penny Berridge is available to work with youth, 8 years of age and up, and adult beginners. Please call the Center to schedule a class.
“Advanced Hand Building Techniques,” 6 wks., $170/$150, materials included.
“Throwing Clay, Using the Wheel”; Instructor Roger Bench (705-4683); $150/$130; 5 weeks, adults & youth 8 yrs. & up. Call the instructor to schedule a 5 wk. class. Roger is available for classes either Monday or Tuesday evenings from 6-8 PM.
NEW!! –“ Self-Paced Instruction” by CHICO OSTEN. Watercolor, oils, pastels, pencils, all media and all subject matter can be used. The cost of this 6 wks. class is $100/$85. Students should bring in ideas about the project or subject matter they would like to work on. Students’ original photos are encouraged. Each student will receive individualized attention tailored to the skill level and personal goals. The class will meet on Wednesday from 1:30-4:30 PM. DATES will be scheduled when we know we have enough interest. Class would meet out front instead of back classroom.
WATERCOLOR
NEW!! - “Individualized Watercolor Instruction” by KATE McCULLOUGH $100/$85. Students will work on projects of their own choosing and at their own pace with individualized instruction, tailored for each student’s skill level and specific learning goals. SATURDAYS: OIL PASTELS
NEW: “Beginning to Intermediate Oil Pastels” Charles “Chico” Osten; 6 wks. class; $100/$85. Students will be introduced to the joys of using oil pastels in the creation of landscapes and still life. Students will need minimal drawing skills and knowledge of color theory and of mixing colors. A materials list will be available at the Art Center front desk. Appropriate for all ages except young children. Saturday afternoons 1:30-4:30 PM; Must have 5 interested students to start a class.
DRAWING
NEW: "Drawing & Paints Portraits" Charles "Chico" Osten; four weeks of portrait drawing basics, $60.00 MEETS EVERY THURSDAY IN FEBRUARY (9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.). This class will be immediately followed by "Portrait Painting" in any color medium, 6 weeks. Students and instructor will determine the time and dates during the February drawing classes. Cost for 6 weeks - art center members in $85.00.
“Perspective Drawing” Elaine Flaherty - This course is designed to develop the ability of students to draw objects in the correct perspective and proportion, and is a follow up to the spring class. However, Elaine will adapt the lessons to suit new students as well. Students will explore formal perspective in order for them to achieve the techniques necessary for success not only in drawing projects, but also in paintings. No experience is necessary for this class. A materials list is available at the Center. Must have 5 students to start class. Cost: $100/$85.

CHILDREN’S ART: Elaine Flaherty. Students should be 6-12 yrs. of age. Elaine offers a wide variety of materials and techniques for children: pencil, watercolor, clay, paper, etc. 6 week class: $100/$85, includes materials. Must have 5 students to start class.

BOOKMAKING:
“Bookmaking Class!” Bob Meadows 6wks $125/$115, materials included.
Explore the fascinating world of making books from scratch. Create traditional formats and newer adaptations. No previous experience. Bring a pencil, a ruler, a craft or Xacto knife, scissors, and a cutting mat.

OIL STICKS: Instructor, Paul DeMarrais. Paul has created a new line of oil sticks and wants to offer a workshop on Saturday, March 17, 2012, 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM.
This class will introduce students to this very exciting, silky smooth new medium. Oil sticks are oil paint in stick form. Paul says: “I make them from walnut oil, dry pigments, and natural waxes. My sticks are a blast to use on any number of surfaces. Come join me to learn some of the many ways this medium can be used to create oil paintings. I will supply students with a small kit of oil sticks to get them started and will have others available for students to use. Students should bring a 16’ x 20’ stretched canvas or canvas board to work on. I know you will be amazed with the possibilities when working with oil sticks! Class size limited to ten students.”
COST: $100 for FCAC members; $120 for nonmembers.
NEW CLASS!!! “Egyptian Coil Bracelet” offered by Carol Crye
(Our first class was so successful - another is planned)
Carol Crye is offering a new workshop at the Art Center: “Egyptian Coil Bracelet.” This very entertaining evening workshop will show participants how simple it is to create what appears to be a complicated design. In class, participants will make a beautiful copper wire bracelet and also learn the basic techniques of adding a patina to give depth and richness to their finished designs. Proper use of hand tools and how to choose wire strengths and gauges will be discussed. Class cost is $35 per participant. There is a limit of 10 participants per evening workshop. We are offering two additional dates to choose from: February 18, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM.Wed., Feb. 8, 6:00 PM - 9:30 PM, cost $35 Copper wire is provided for each participant. If preferred, students may work in other metals and are welcome to bring those along to class.
Recommended tools include round nose pliers, chain nose pliers, flush cutters, ball peen or chasing hammer, small steel bench block.
Carol will have some tools available for sharing; however, she recommends bringing your own hand tools if you have them available. She typically has some quality hand tools available for purchase or will provide students with information about where they can purchase them. #0000 steel wool, liver-of-sulfur, and polishing pads for adding patina are provided at no additional charge for this workshop. If participants choose, they can leave their bracelet unfinished.
Carol will also offer workshops in the new future for making necklaces and earrings and will be teaching glass bead making using “lamp work.” Call 865-357-2787 or email fcartcenter@knology.net.

Workshop description: Create a two-color bracelet using the basic knots in the age-old craft of Macramé (knotting). Class will include review and practice of basic knots essential for the craft. Expect to finish the bracelet with two colors of cotton cord; focal beads will be incorporated to illustrate use of accent/color in Macramé design.
Provided materials: “Macrame, Weekend Crafter,” Lark Press; knotting board, “T” pins, cord and beads, printed instructions/handout
